What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and it is a form of advertising where the content publisher optimises their site and content so that it appears on the first page of results (see below) when someone types a target phrase into a search engine…It is therefore different to CPC (Cost Per Click) and CPM (cost per mille) marketing and as content providers are not charged when people visit their web site theoretically it should provide great value for money as a marketing channel.

It's All About Targeting The Right Phrases

If you sell Umbrellas some SEO agencies will be very happy for you to create and run SEO campaigns targeting “Umbrella” as a keyword. The volume is great  (50,000 searches a month in the UK) so a lot of money can be spent and a lot of clicks could theoretically be generated…

There is a problem though…how many of those 50,000 people typing “Umbrella” into Google every month actually have the intent to buy an umbrella?

Maybe a lot of them are actually searching for the song Umbrella by Rihanna?

“buy umbrella” only gets 480 searches a month in the UK for instance.

So unless you are targeting phrases with the right underlying intent you will be wasting a lot of money trying to rank for the wrong terms…targeting “long tail” terms with the right intent such as “buy umbrella” is key…

Content And Links Are *Still* Key

Google’s big innovation when it started in 1998 was to stop focusing solely on the content of web pages to judge their relevance against search queries but to treat each link to a web page as effectively a vote for that web page and use that as an important additional measure to judge the quality and relevance of web pages.

Fast forward to 2020 and although things have moved on a lot the two most important things when getting content on to the front page of Google are still the quality of the content and the amount and quality of the links to it.

In the old days “wild west” SEO it was all about stuffing the key phrase onto the page as many times as you could and getting as many links to the content as you could…

Google have spent the last 20 years improving their algorithm to be able to judge the content and link quality as well as any human and are getting pretty good at it now…

Now it really is about quality rather than quantity…the art of SEO now is to create quality content and facilitate some quality links to the content to help prove its’ quality to Google…
